2 TRANSPORTATION RESEARCH BOARD TRB’s vision for transportation research is driven by its strategic plan Developed using a very participative process Adopted by TRB Executive Committee in June 2014 New TRB Executive Director given charge to ensure implementation Provides basis for accountability for TRB staff and volunteers TRB Strategic Plan

4 TRANSPORTATION RESEARCH BOARD 1.Anticipate transportation challenges and provide leadership in promoting and conducting research and policy analysis to help meet those challenges. 2.Conduct and promote knowledge creation and dissemination, especially on innovative practices and technologies in the transportation sector. TRB Goals

5 TRANSPORTATION RESEARCH BOARD 3.Provide timely and informed advice on transportation and transportation-related issues to decision makers and others who are responsible for multimodal transportation systems. 4.Act as an effective and impartial forum for the exchange of knowledge and information, including transportation and its relationship with social, economic, environmental, and other issues. 8 TRANSPORTATION RESEARCH BOARD 1.Develop and implement processes to identify and address emerging and critical transportation issues in a more strategic and proactive manner. – Executive Committee identifies “hot topics” – Guidance to technical committees, CRP programs, policy studies for conferences, papers, sessions, studies, research projects – Identify opportunities to work with other parts of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Emerging and Critical Issues

Periodic stakeholder surveys to solicit feedback on, and examples of, the impacts of TRB programs Expand efforts such as the Research Pays Off series, the Key Research Achievements database, the AASHTO RAC annual “Sweet 16,” and the NCHRP and ACRP Impacts on Practice.
