Basic needs  Flat teeth to chew plants  Have fur to keep them warm  Use antlers for protection, fighting, and to mark their territory  Have glands between their hooves to help them keep in touch with their herds by detecting the scents that other deer leave

Functions  Antlers are used for fighting rival bucks  Strong legs for running and jumping  Eyes, ears and noses help them see, hear and smell better than humans. These senses help them detect predators.  Deer swallow their food whole, then they will cough the food back up and they won’t digest until they chew it again. They are called cud-chewers

Food Web

Food Source  Depends on the season –Winter: dig for grass with antlers –Spring: get acorns off trees –Autumn: eat fallen apples off the ground –Summer: eat grass, flowers and ferns (occasionally they will eat a few mushrooms)

Habitat  Deer are found in grasslands, because that is where their food source is  Trees give them shelter and a good hiding place  It gives them places to escape from predators
