When you go shopping follow your grocery list avoid IMPULSE SHOPPING. Buying an item you don’t really need just because it is appealing at the time

The unit price is the cost per ounce, pound, gram, item or other measure Unit prices make it easier to compare costs of items especially those that come in different size packages

Different forms of food - fresh vs frozen Different brands – the price you pay for food is based on cost of advertising eg. Name brands spend more on this vs generic Different sizes – larger sizes often have a lower unit price than smaller, but NOT always. Consider how much you will use over time

Always buy food in GOOD condition – poor food is wasteful Avoid containers that are damaged Be sure refrigerator items feel cold Be sure frozen packages are frozen hard – ice crystals means defrosted and refrozen Buy refrigerator and freezer items last

Be considerate – don’t block traffic Handle food carefully Don’t open packages Put raw meat and poultry items into plastic bags Look for best before date – most recent best

Bring food back to school/home immediately and store it in the proper places Perishables in fridge Meats into freezer unless using within 24 hours – then place into highest part of the fridge on a plate

2. Locate a food item that shows UNIT Price - Find 2 sizes of the same product and indicate the size and the unit price for that product. Which is the best buy and why 3.Locate fresh brocolli and frozen broccoli. Write the price down for each. 250 grams of each. Which is the better choice and why?

4.Locate a sale section, examine the food items in that section are their any damaged goods (dents, torn packaging). What are the savings? Go find that same item in the middle section of the store and see what the full price is? Discuss your findings. 5.Locate a 2 litre of 2 % milk. Find the best before date stamped on the carton. Copy onto this assignment
