Chem-To-Go Lesson 21 Unit 5 TYPES OF CHEMICAL REACTIONS

 DEFINITION: two or more compounds or elements go together to build a more complex compound  GENERIC EQUATION: A + B  AB  EXAMPLE: 2Al + 3Br 2  2AlBr 3 SYNTHESIS REACTIONS

DECOMPOSITION REACTIONS  GENERIC EQUATION: AB  A + B  EXAMPLE: H 2 O 2  H 2 O + O 2 DEFINITION: a single compound breaks down into 2 or more elements or compounds

COMBUSTION OF HYDROCARBON REACTIONS DEFINITION: diatomic oxygen combines with a hydrocarbon to release energy in the form of heat and light  GENERIC EQUATION: C x H y + O 2  CO 2 + H 2 O  EXAMPLE: CH 4 + 2O 2  Co 2 + 2H 2 O

SINGLE REPLACEMENT REACTIONS DEFINITION: a single element reacts with a compound and replaces one of the compound elements  GENERIC EQUATION: A + BX --> AX + B  METAL EXAMPLE: K + CuSO 4  K 2 SO 4 + Cu  NONMETAL EXAMPLE: Cl 2 + KBr  KCl + Br 2

DOUBLE REPLACEMENT REACTIONS DEFINITION: an ionic compound reacts with another ionic compound; the ions switch partners.  GENERIC EQUATION: AX + BY --> AY + BX  EXAMPLE: CoCl 2 + Na 3 (PO 4 ) 2  Co 3 (PO 4 ) 2 + NaCl
