Tim Ricks, DMD, MPH Area Dental Officer Wednesday, June 5, 2013 Albuquerque Area Dental Chiefs/Prevention Coordinators Meeting

Access to Dental Care Healthy People 2020 Objective OH-7: “Increase the proportion of children, adolescents, and adults who used the oral health care system in the past year.” Access leads to increased preventive services. http://www.healthypeople.gov/2020/topicsobjectives2 020/objectiveslist.aspx?topicId=32

Dental Access Numbers U.S. – 44.5% HP Goal – 49% IHS: 20-25% Albuquerque Area: ~29% (AIDC 48%)

Access Logic and Current Status Definition: Proportion of patients with either a 0000 or 0190 code (note that even though the new CDT2013 code book has redefined 0190, the IHS is still keeping it as the revisit code) Area Goal: 29% Where we are at the halfway point of the GPRA Year (the GPRA Year is July 1, 2012 – June 30, 2013): 31.0%

Dental Sealants HP 2020 Objective OH-12: Increase the proportion of children, adolescents, and adults who used the oral health care system in the past year “Increase the proportion of children and adolescents who have received dental sealants on their molar teeth.” Sealants prevent caries (tooth decay).

Sealant Numbers U.S.: 1.5% of 3-5 year-olds, 25.5% of 6-9 year-olds, and 21.9% of 13-15 year-olds have sealants. IHS: the “largest sealant program in the world.” Albuquerque Area: 49% of 6-9 year-olds had existing sealants. (AIDC, 32.7%)

Sealant Logic and Current Status Definition: Proportion of patients aged 2-15 with at least one intact sealant (0007, 1351) Area Goal: 15%

Topical Fluoride The GPRA goal of fluoride isn’t based directly on a HP 2020 objective. Years ago, the GPRA measure was water fluoridation, which is an HP2020 objective (OH-13). But we know that topical fluoride is very effective at helping prevent caries, and that is a HP2020 objective (OH-1).

Caries Numbers 68% of 1-5 year-olds in the Albuquerque Area compared to 54% in the IHS 90% of 6-9 year-old children in the Albuquerque Area compared to 83% in the IHS 45% in the general U.S. population.

Fluoride Logic and Current Status Definition: Proportion of patients aged 1-15 with at least 1 topical fluoride application (1203, 1206, 1208, and V07.31, although the 1203 code is going away with CDT2013) Area Goal: 35%

Today’s Featured Programs Access – Jicarilla Sealants – Santa Fe Fluoride Patients - Zia
