Physical and Chemical Properties & Changes Mrs. Hooks 6 th Grade Science
3
Physical Properties Physical Properties- any characteristic that can be observed or measured without changing the identity of the object. – Observations are made using your 5 senses 1.Sight 2.Hearing 3.Touch 4.Smell 5.Taste- NO NO!! Do not taste in labs!! Matter- anything that has mass and takes up space.
4
Physical Properties continued…. Physical Properties (ob- observable, m- measured) 1.Color (Ob) 2.Size (ob) 3.Shape (ob) 4.Length (ob/m) 5.Mass (ob /m)- the amount of matter in an object 6.Volume (ob/m)- the amount of space an object takes up 7.Density- (ob/m)- the amount of mass a material has in a given volume D=M/V
5
Physical Properties Continued…… 8. State of matter (ob)- depends on its temperature and pressure. Solid, liquid, gas, and plasma 9. melting point (ob/m)- the temperature at which a solid becomes a liquid – Temperature at which a solid becomes a liquid is 0 ° C water 10. boiling point (ob/m- the temperature at which a substance in the liquid state becomes a gas. – Temperature at which a liquid becomes a gas 100°C water SolidLiquidGasPlasma Fixed shape Takes the shape of container Takes shape of container Occurs at very high temperatu res Fixed Volume Fixed volume Volume of container Fluorescen t light bulbs, lightning
6
Metallic Properties Physical properties of metals Luster Malleability- ability of some metals to be hammered, pressed, or rolled into thin sheets Ductility- ability of some metals to be drawn into wires.
7
Physical Change The physical properties of a substance change, but the identity of the substance does NOT change. Ask yourself 2 Question…… 1. Is the substance still the same thing? YES 2. Can I change it back? YES THEN IT IS A PHYSICAL CHANGE!!!!
8
Dichotomous Key A tool used to determine the physical properties or characteristics to determine the identity of a specimen and classify them.
9
Measurements Mass gram Density g/cm³ Length centimeter, meter Volume cm³
10
Chemical Properties Chemical property- any characteristic that gives a substance the ability to undergo a change that results in a new substance 1.Flammability 2.Reacts with oxygen 3.Reacts with water 4.Reacts with light
11
Chemical Change A change in the identity of the substance due to the chemical properties of that substance. Ask yourself 2 Question…… 1. Is the substance still the same thing? NO 2. Can I change it back? No THEN IT IS A chemical CHANGE!!!!
13
Here’s your sign! If you observe one of these things, chances are it is a Chemical Change! – Bubbles – Production of heat – Production of light – Smoke – Change in color (can be either P or C) – Production of sound Chemical Change Chemical Change
