Objective Determine how using 9mm tags may affect our current research project in the John Day Basin
3
Study Location -Rotary Screw Trap -Middle Fork Array
4
9mm Tags: Could Allow tagging and tracking of early life stages. Possibly reduced tag effects. 1st year of a 3-year study Paired Release Study - 9mm vs 12mm detectability IMW Crews began deploying 9mm tags (Summer 2014) Study Background
5
Hypotheses: 12mm tags would be detected at higher rates at all tested sites. As flow increases probability of detection decreases. Factors Monitored: Mean Daily Flow (Q) at release. Release Temperature Individual Fish Metrics Length Weight Release Day
6
Used Rotary Screw Trap to capture out-migrating steelhead smolt. Tag groups: 12mm Trial - 9mm Trial - 12mm Standard Release Released trial groups directly into river one mile above the MF Array. FS1001M MUX – 2x3 Antennas Tag Shed Study March 21 st - June 6 th, 2014 Methods

Conclusions 9mm tags have a much lower probability of detection at the MF Array when compared to 12mm tags There is no apparent difference in detection at John Day Dam or Bonneville. Flow effects on detection probability were difficult to test during this season. Some evidence to suggestion fish length affects detection rates.
