3 Which Words? Verbs must be RHETORICALLY ACCURATE VERBS You must include 10 TONE WORDS Nouns, adjectives and adverbs must come from any text we use in class (short stories, AoWs, etc).

4 By the end of the semester… You will turn in a table that includes at least 65 words Of those words THREE will be decorated and turned in no later than Decorated words MUST be tone words, rhetorically accurate verbs or adjectives only. NO NOUNS If your decorated word goes on the WORD WALL then you will get 5 extra credit points

7 Speaker While reading: What voice is telling the story, reporting, and making an account of the event? What influence or POV does this speaker present us with? Does this speaker hold a BIAS? Any information that may have an influence on the writing

8 Occasion While reading: What is the time and place of the piece? What encouraged/prompted this writing? What situation was the author presented with? The context that prompted the writing of the text

9 Audience While reading: To whom was the text directed? Think political parties, social classes, certain group of people… Consider the language the speaker uses and reference to God, a particular nation, heaven/hell, etc. What clues are given to make me think this was or was not written to a particular audience?

10 Purpose While reading: Why was this text written? What does the author want readers to learn from it? What is his/her message? HOW does he/she convey the message? How is the text supposed to make readers feel?

11 Subject/Syntax/Style While reading: The general idea/content or topic that’s being written about. How has this subject been presented to readers? (allegory, symbolism…)

12 Tone While reading: What is the speaker’s attitude? Look at the use of diction, syntax, and imagery to infer the author’s attitude Serious? Humorous? Satirical? Ironic?
