Week 28 3/18--SWBAT distinguish between examples and non-examples of refugees based on provided characteristics and using case studies.

Who/what are refugees? Refugees are considered as such by the US government under the following conditions: Have been targeted due to status in racial/social group/national/religion/political opinion and must leave their country in order to be safe Several places in the world have lost large portions of their population due to emigration of refugees.

Refugees Refugees : are forced to move 1.to another country 2.because they have a reasonable fear of persecution (being threatened or attacked, oppressed) because of their: race social group (woman, members of a low class, etc.) political opinion (against or for the people in power, etc.) religion nationality (country of citizenship) *if someone does not have to leave their country or is not in danger because they belong to one of these 5 types of groups, the US does not consider them a refugee.

Internally Displaced Persons IDP: are forced to flee [run away from] their homes but do not leave the country, due to armed conflict (war) general, intense violence natural or human-caused disaster development (like a highway being built where your house is)

With a partner... Read each case study and decide whether the victims/survivors are refugees or internally displaced persons. Directions: Read each situation and determine if the people’s status is as refugees (R) or internally displaced persons (IDP). Annotate for important facts as you read such as WHY they are refugees or IDP. More than underlines and Highlights!!!
