1. Jacob Lawrence

2. Who is he? Jacob Lawrence was an American painter and apart of the Harlem Renaissance. He was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey in 1917. He referred to his style of paintings as “dynamic cubism”. He painted a series of pictures known as The Migration Series to capture the movement of black people from the south to the north.

3. His Work Migration of the Negro (1941) From 1900 to 1930, African Americans left the rural South to work in industries. Here, Lawrence commented on the sharecropping system that left many African Americans in poverty.

4. His Work T his picture, along with the other one, is a series of paintings called The Migration Series. This pictures shows that many black people wanted to go to the North to gain education. Migration Series 1940-1941

5. His Work This picture was painted to capture the one of the most violent race riots that occurred in St. Louis. Migration Series (1940-1941)

6. Overall The lines of the paintings are very straight and angular just like Mrs. Nelson said. His paintings were always about perseverance, hope and struggle in the black community.
