1 Essential Question: How does Homer use women to affect the plot of the poem? Women in The Iliad

2 Book I 1. Hera-Tells Achilles to do something about the Greeks dying. Tells him to go to Agamemnon and tell him to return the troops to Greece. This prompts Calchas to explain why Apollo is angry with the Greeks which in turn causes an argument between Achilles and Agamemnon about prizes. Achilles quits fighting for Greece.

3 2. Chryseis-The priests daughter. She inadvertently causes an argument between the King and Achilles. 3. Briseis-Prize belonging to Achilles and is taken by Agamemnon. This causes Achilles to ask his mother to see Zeus. He wants Zeus to help the Trojans in the war so Agamemnon will have to beg Achilles to return to fighting.

4 4. Thetis-Goes to see Zeus and asks him to help the Trojans in battle. He agrees to help them.
