3 Glow in the dark pigments
Research Materials Smart and Technical Materials Glow in the dark pigments Phosphorescent pigments are used to make glow in the dark products. They absorb energy and release this energy in the form of light, so glow in the dark. Used for novelty products. Can be made using glow in the dark paint or you can use glow in the dark transfer paper to make products. UV reactive products Thermochromic Dyes Change colour with heat. Used for fun items like children’s play mats and t-shirts. Changes colour when exposed to UV light. Returns to normal when away from light. Used for summer garments to indicate the strength of UV rays – especially good for children’s clothes.

They are used in many different industries including: fashion & furnishing, transport, medicine & the armed forces. How many questions can you answer by locating the information from the “Research Materials Smart and Technical Materials” sheet ? Can you name different products that could be useful made from the materials and why? challenge+ Complete your own research sheet about different Smart and Technical materials. How could you use them on your case? Technical textiles: are created for their performance rather than how they look. Technical textiles are used in: clothing, medical care, sports, transport and buildings and roads. Some products have electronics in them and they are called Interactive textiles.
