Samuel Adams Information Importance: a ringleader of the American Revolution and Sons of Liberty. When trouble was to be made, Samuel Adams was there. He was a constant opponent of British oppression. He started many protests, including the Boston Tea Party. Described as a firebrand, a revolutionary, and a patriot, he was perhaps the most vocal of his generation to demand independence from Great Britain. Paul Revere Information Importance: He was a member of the Sons of Liberty. He made the engraving of the Boston Massacre. He joined with 50 other revolutionaries in the Boston Tea Party. Revere became a regular messenger to help the revolutionary cause. He took that historic ride to Lexington to inform the people that British troops were coming. The next day the Revolutionary War began and because of Revere, the patriots were ready. John Adams Information Importance: He successfully defended the British soldiers involved in the Boston Massacre (1770). He was a delegate to the Continental Congress. Helped persuade them to declare independence from England. Also helped write the Declaration of Independence. Thomas Paine Information Importance: Thomas Paine was one of the great fiery voices of the American Revolution. He published Common Sense, a popular pamphlet that argued for complete American independence from Britain. Later that year in his pamphlet The American Crisis he penned his famous line, "These are the times that try men's souls" and inspired the colonists to keep fighting the war. Patrick Henry Information Importance: Henry's reputation as a passionate and fiery speaker exceeded even that of Samuel Adams. Argued openly for separation from England which was treason against the mother country. Benjamin Franklin Information Importance: During the American Revolution, he convinced the French to help the Americans. Franklin told the French that if the Redcoats won the war that the British would be too powerful. The French and British were enemies, so having Great Britain be this powerful would be bad for the French. The French sent supplies to the colonists through Franklin and his spies. Wentworth Cheswell Information Importance: An African American patriot leader and first African American elected to public office. He was a messenger just like Paul Revere. When Paul Revere rode to Lexington and Concord warning the British were coming, Cheswell rode to New Hampshire issuing the same warning. Crispus Attucks Information Importance: The first American to die in the colonists' fight for freedom from Britain. He was an escaped slave. King George III Information Importance: King of England. The Declaration of Independence refers to the king over and over again but only as “HE” and he is the king who lost the fight to keep control over the American colonies.
