what is a rhyme? words that have the same sound Example: The tiny bird in the tree Was singing songs just for me

what is rhythm? Rhythm in poetry is a pattern created with long and short,soft and loud, weak and strong sounds Example: She drank from a bottle called DRINK ME And grew so tall. She ate from a plate called TASTE ME And down she shrank so small

What is a simile? a figure of speech in which things are compared using the words “as” or ‘like” Example: The surface of the water looked as smooth as glass.

What is a metaphor? a figure of speech in which things are compared by stating that one thing is another EXAMPLE: “The clouds are cotton balls in the sky.”

what is alliteration? the repetition of words with the same beginning sound EXAMPLE: “Polly planted plenty of pretty pansies”

what is personification? a figure of speech in which objects are given human qualities EXAMPLE: “The sun played peek-a-boo with the clouds”

what is onomatopoeia? words that sound like the objects or actions to which they refer EXAMPLE : “A pesky mosquito buzzed around my head.”

What is imagery? pictures that are created with words EXAMPLE: “I saw floating feathers on a silent pond.”

What is repetition? the repeating of a word or phrase to add rhythm EXAMPLE: “As the moon goes down and the stars disappear, I wait and wait, and wait, and wait. As the crickets stop chirping, and the birds come out, I wait, and wait, and wait.”

WHO AM I? My hair is a ball of tangles yarn The wind was a funnel in the sky The sand on the beach was a skillet on my feet

WHO AM I? The wild and wooly whale waited and wondered when we would walk by

WHO AM I? The ocean swooshed across the shore Crunch, crunch went the potato chips in my mouth Whack! Was the sound the ball made when it came into contact with the bat.

WHO AM I? Snake scales slithered against the tree Rain sprinkled on frosty grass The sun drifting behind snow capped mountains Crickets singing in the night a cool midnight breeze And me Imagining it all. -5th grade Pawling Elem.

WHO AM I? The deck sighed with relief at the removal of the heavy book The eggs stared back at me, pleading with their eyes to not eat them

WHO AM I? A centipede won an award surrounded by hundreds of fans Though his speech only lasted a minute It took hours to shake all his hands

WHO AM I? My fingers are like little Worms coming out of their holes. My teeth are as white as the winter snow. My heart is as cold as a snake’s blood I live in a phone and eat electrons -D.W. 5th grade

WHO AM I? They said come skating; They said it’s so nice. They said come skating; I’d done it twice. They said come skating; It sounded nice...I wore roller- They meant ice

WHO AM I? Two boxes met upon a road Said one unto the other, “If you’re a box, And I’m a box, Then you must be my brother. Our sides are thin, We’re cavin’ in, And we must get no thinner.” And so two boxes, hand in hand, Went home to have their dinner.
