Parts of Speech There are 8 parts of speech

Noun Person, place or thing (or idea)
Can be used as the subject or object of the sentence Common noun - ex. officer Proper noun ex. Captain Smith

Pronoun Takes the place of a noun
Can be used as the subject or object of the sentence Examples I, he, she, it, you, they, them we Prounouns

Verbs Shows action or expresses being Examples: studies is becomes

Conjunction Joins or connects words, phrases, or clauses
Examples: and, but, or nor Use FANBOYS to remember the coordinating conjunctions

ADVERB Modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb
Answers the question of how, when, or where Often ends in ly

ADJECTIVES Modifies a noun or pronoun
The unusual package was placed on my desk. The package felt cold.

ADVERBS OFTEN END IN LY – She swims rapidly under pressure.
MORE EXAMPLES: OFTEN, NEVER, SOMETIMES, SELDOM, ALWAYS, VERY

PREPOSITION A word used to relate to a noun or pronoun to some other word in the sentence. Common examples: On, over, under, to , up The horse ran under the barn. The subject and verb are never in the prepositional phrase.

INTERJECTIONS WORD THAT EXPRESSES A STRONG FEELING. Usually stands by itself. Whew! Oh! Well, Hooray!
