2. What is World History?  World History is the study of human history from the beginnings of civilization (the earliest humans called hominids of East Africa 3.6 million B.C.) to the birth of the powerful empires of Africa and Asia some 2,000 years ago to present day societies.

3. Essential Question: What makes a successful society?  Assess all elements of a society including: Leadership, Government, Laws, Economy, Culture

4. How do we study world history? #1 S.A.D. Cycle#2 Conflict This method is used to study the characteristics of ONE civilization at a time. This method is used to determine what types of conflicts each civilization faced that challenged its rule and made its existence hard to continue. For each society we study, you will be responsible for using all of these tools to make better sense of the rise and fall of this society using your book and notes.

5. #1 S.A.D. Cycle (a.k.a. CYCLE)  It’s a way of defining a society by itself: how it organized itself, the achievement that it had in culture and technology, and the reasons for why it declined and fell apart.

7. STABILITY : looks at the way the society organized its people based on three dimensions Stability GovernmentEconomy Social Structure

8. Government who are the leaders, how are the leaders chosen, the services that it provides its people, must be strong enough to collect taxes, what does it demand of its citizenry, and how does it maintain security

9. Economy will be based initially on agriculture-therefore, enough food must be produced to feed everyone plus stimulate trade. (food surplus ) By the Renaissance, some sectors of the economy (cities) must be devoted to trade and manufacturing = growth. Countries base their strength on how much bullion (gold and silver) they can accumulate. : having enough food to feed its members and trade to increase wealth and interaction with other societies: what is its economy based on, what do they produce, do they trade and with whom

10. Social Structure will look like a pyramid with a few wealthy and powerful people at the top/masses of poor and marginalized people at the bottom. Everyone must know and accept their role for things to run smoothly…what are the expectations of each class Religion and cultural attitudes often are used to reinforce the social structure: what are the religious beliefs that they have
