VCE IT Theory Slideshows by Mark Kelly 2016-2019 study design By Mark Kelly, vceit.com, mark@vceit.com Begin

Contents Purpose of a mock-up Features of a good mock-up 2

Mock-ups are design tools They design the appearance of a solution – screen displays – software interfaces – printed output Often used as design ideas for a client to approve 3VCE IT slideshows © 2015-2019 Mark Kelly, vceit.com

Often drawn by hand (especially in VCAA SACs and always in exams) Can be created with software (e.g. Balsamiq) or online 4VCE IT slideshows © 2015-2019 Mark Kelly, vceit.com

A sort of “photographic” representation of what a printout or a screen will look like A bit like a prototype or demonstration model 5VCE IT slideshows © 2015-2019 Mark Kelly, vceit.com

May have faked text. – ‘Lorem Ipsum’ is the standard ‘filler text’ – Venenatis aliquam lacinia in a a risus eu a adipiscing etiam magnis molestie semper sociis id nisi taciti mus non aliquet.Himenaeos dictumst et vestibulum rhoncus eros a ante condimentum penatibus sit quis netus mi dis consectetur leo tempus vestibulum non sociosqu parturient montes porta curabitur a torquent.Vestibulum condimentum dis condimentum morbi gravida est porta vestibulum pretium. 6VCE IT slideshows © 2015-2019 Mark Kelly, vceit.com

– Positions of elements – Relative sizes – Margins, borders – Alignment of objects – Colours – Image contents – Headings, text blocks – Navigation controls 7VCE IT slideshows © 2015-2019 Mark Kelly, vceit.com

– A visual indication of the orientation of the display (i.e. it should be drawn in portrait or landscape mode) – If orientation can change (e.g. on a phone, tablet) and the display also changes, each orientation should be mocked-up separately 8VCE IT slideshows © 2015-2019 Mark Kelly, vceit.com Portrait orientation Landscape orientation

Often has detailed annotations containing formatting information… Enough detail so that the design could be given to someone else to accurately produce the page or screen. – E.g. “Arial, 14pt, bold, dark blue” 9VCE IT slideshows © 2015-2019 Mark Kelly, vceit.com

This mock- up plans out content, layout and formatting. 10 VCE IT slideshows © 2015-2019 Mark Kelly, vceit.com

Don’t repeat yourself endlessly: summarise. E.g. – All body text is black 12pt Arial, fully justified. – Every Heading 1 is 18pt TNR. – All links are underlined, blue. – All tables have invisible borders except for the pets table 11VCE IT slideshows © 2015-2019 Mark Kelly, vceit.com

Does not need to be 100% specific. E.g. can specify a “fancy font, big, blue” or “picture of a cat”. Include content information (what a text block is talking about; what a picture should show) 12VCE IT slideshows © 2015-2019 Mark Kelly, vceit.com

The exact wording of body text is not needed. Include text of headings to identify contents of the text (e.g. Why dogs are good pets”) Do not produce a uselessly vague mock-up… heading picture text This sort of design is a waste of time. No-one could work out what needs to go on this page. 13VCE IT slideshows © 2015-2019 Mark Kelly, vceit.com
