GOAL: SIMPLIFY ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS Section 1-3: Simplifying Algebraic Expressions

Definitions Terms: For an expression 2x + 1, terms are the parts that are added together. Coefficient: In a term with a variable, such as 2x the 2 is the coefficient. Like Terms: Have the same variable with matching exponents. For example: 2x and 4x are like terms 4ab and -8ab are like terms Constant Terms: Numbers such as 3 and -2, they are also considered like terms.

TWO ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS ARE EQUIVALENT EXPRESSIONS IF WHEN YOU SUBSTITUTE THE SAME VALUE FOR THE VARIABLE IN EACH EXPRESSION, YOU ALWAYS GET THE SAME RESULT. A Simplified Expression has no grouping symbols and all like terms have been combined.
