Global Warming
2
Greenhouse Effect Many of the gasses surrounding the Earth work like glass in a greenhouse.
3
Greenhouse gasses act like a blanket, traping the heat from the Sun, warming the Earth’s surface.
4
Greenhouse Effect:
5
Importance of Greenhouse Gases
Greenhouse gases are essential for life. Without them temperatures on Earth would fall from 15°C to -18°C. So what’s the problem?
6
Too Much Too Fast! The amount of carbon dioxide produced over the past 40 years has tripled due to the burning of wood and fossil fuels. Increasing levels of carbon dioxide has changed the balance between photosynthesis and respiration, and has altered the world’s climate.
7
Isn’t warmer better?
8
Global Warming:
9
A Warmer Climate… Arctic ecosystem are changing drastically!
Snow caps and glaciers will melt causing rivers to overflow. Melting snow and ice will raise sea levels causing problems for those of us on coasts.
10
Influx of fresh water from glaciers will alter ocean current patterns affecting weather systems.
Changing climate will affect countless animals who will need to adjust to new habitats.
