Starter -Recap Write in your book the significance of the temptation story for both Jesus and for Christians today

Importance of Temptations for Jesus He was now ready to start his ministry, knowing he had triumphed over the temptations of evil: – reinforcing status as Son of God, who alone can defeat evil – Confirming his authority and power to cast out Satan wherever he goes. Importance of Temptations for Christians Who is Jesus: Proof of unique status of Jesus as Son of God, capable of defeating evil. Hope & Encouragement: for persecuted Christians - knowing that Jesus is Son of God and has authority over evil. Also that his teaching is true teaching from God, not infected by evil. Part of following Jesus: in Lent, Christians pray and fast to defeat evil in their own lives, with God’s help, as disciples of Jesus.

Learning Objectives: To explore the conversation that took place at Caesarea Philippi and it’s significance in Jesus’ Ministry Caesarea Philippi (1)

Learning Outcomes All: Will be able to describe the conversation Jesus’ had at Caesarea Philippi Most: Will be able to describe how this event could be considered a ‘watershed’ moment in Jesus’ ministry Some: Will be able to explain how Jesus ministry changed course after the event

27 Then Jesus and his disciples went away to the villages near Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, "Tell me, who do people say I am?" 28 "Some say that you are John the Baptist," they answered; "others say that you are Elijah, while others say that you are one of the prophets." 29 "What about you?" he asked them. "Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, "You are the Messiah." 30 Then Jesus ordered them, "Do not tell anyone about me." 31 Then Jesus began to teach his disciples: "The Son of Man must suffer much and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the teachers of the Law. He will be put to death, but three days later he will rise to life." 32 He made this very clear to them. So Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33 But Jesus turned around, looked at his disciples, and rebuked Peter. "Get away from me, Satan," he said. "Your thoughts don't come from God but from human nature!" Mark 8:27-33 All: Will be able to describe the conversation Jesus’ had at Caesarea Philippi

In your books put the following statements in the correct order. 2. Jesus and his disciples went away to the villages near Caesarea Philippi 5. Jesus asked "Tell me, who do people say I am?” 7. “Some say that you are John the Baptist, Elijah, prophets." 4. Who do you say I am? 3. Peter answered, "You are the Messiah." 8. Jesus ordered them, "Do not tell anyone about me." 9. Jesus predicts his passion 1. Peter rebuked Jesus 6. "Get away from me, Satan, your thoughts don't come from God but from human nature!" 2, 5, 7, 4, 3, 8, 1, 9 All: Will be able to describe the conversation Jesus’ had at Caesarea Philippi

Anointed One = English Christ = Greek Messiah = Hebrew The Anointed One They both mean the same thing! Please note this in your book as both will be used in your Exam!

This is the first time we see Jesus called Christ. When Peter says, ‘You are the Christ’, Jesus does not deny it, but ordered his disciples to keep it a secret. Discuss with the person sitting next to you why you think Jesus said this. Understanding

Jewish expectations of the Messiah. Not wanting to demand obedience or respect Political issues – puts Jesus at risk. Wanting to focus on his teaching The fact that Jesus often told people not to tell others who he was is called the Messianic Secret. Now answer the question in your book: Why did Jesus want to keep the Messianic secret? Understanding

Remember: Jesus’ disciples have given up everything to follow Jesus. They have left their families, homes, jobs to follow him. Here, he tells them he’s going to die. How would you feel if you were Peter? Understanding

"Get away from me, Satan," he said. "Your thoughts don't come from God but from human nature!" Why? How might they have been feeling? Understanding

I have given up everything for Jesus, my family, my home, my possessions – all to follow him! Of course I am not happy he is going to die on me now! Pete’s forgotten God’s purpose for me! He’s trying to tempt me with an easier path! I got enough temptation in the desert thank you! I think he still has a lot to learn if he is to follow me! “Peter was right to rebuke Jesus” Do you agree? Give both sides of the argument. Refer to Mark’s Gospel in your answer.

The Importance of this Story This story is important as it reveals that Jesus truly is the Messiah, the Son of God. It shows that Peter has recognised Jesus for who he is. It is also an example of a time when Jesus reveals his mission by predicting that he is to die and rise again. Furthermore, it is an example of the failure of the disciples. Most: Will be able to describe how this event could be considered a ‘watershed’ moment in Jesus’ ministry Task: Explain why the events at Caesarea Philippi were important. 6 marks.
