Measurin g Matter

Weight and Mass

A. Weight  Weight – measure of the force of gravity on an object B. Mass  Mass – measurement of the amount of matter in the object C. Units of Mass  International System of Units (SI) – measures the properties of matter  SI unit that measures length - meter  SI unit that measures volume - liter  SI unit that measures mass - gram

1.Volume  Volume – amount of space that matter occupies (takes up) A. Units of Volume  Common units include: liter (L), milliliter (mL), cubic centimeter (cm 3 ) B. Calculating Volume  Rectangular Object: Volume = length x width x height Irregular Object: Fill a graduated cylinder with water (about halfway). Drop the object in. Subtract the original water level from the new water level to get the volume.

1.Density  Density – relates the mass of a material in a given volume  Density = mass ÷ volume A.Sinking or Floating  Objects with a density GREATER than water SINK  Objects with a density LESS than water FLOAT
