2
Weight and Mass
3
A. Weight Weight – measure of the force of gravity on an object B. Mass Mass – measurement of the amount of matter in the object C. Units of Mass International System of Units (SI) – measures the properties of matter SI unit that measures length - meter SI unit that measures volume - liter SI unit that measures mass - gram
4
1.Volume Volume – amount of space that matter occupies (takes up) A. Units of Volume Common units include: liter (L), milliliter (mL), cubic centimeter (cm 3 ) B. Calculating Volume Rectangular Object: Volume = length x width x height Irregular Object: Fill a graduated cylinder with water (about halfway). Drop the object in. Subtract the original water level from the new water level to get the volume.
5
1.Density Density – relates the mass of a material in a given volume Density = mass ÷ volume A.Sinking or Floating Objects with a density GREATER than water SINK Objects with a density LESS than water FLOAT
