Noun Clauses Function as nouns: subjects, direct objects, indirect objects, objects of prepositions, or predicate nominatives Begin with words what, who, whoever, whom, whomever, whatever, and that

Noun Clause Examples What he said didn’t make any sense. I did not know that he could not swim. Give whoever calls first the prize. I learn from what I see and hear. His excuse is that he forgot his book.

Adjective Clauses Function as adjectives—describe or modify nouns and pronouns Begin with words who, whom, whose, which, or that Answer the questions which one, what kind, or how many? Rachel is the girl whom I like. What kind of girl?

Adverb Clauses Function as adverbs—describe or modify verbs, adjectives, or adverbs Begin with subordinating conjunction Answer questions how, why, when, where, to what extent, how much, and under what condition? After I finished dinner, I ate my dessert. When did I eat dessert?
