1. Engineering Design Central Concepts: Engineering design involves practical problem solving, research, development, and invention/innovation, and requires designing, drawing, building, testing, and redesigning. Students should demonstrate the ability to use the engineering design process to solve a problem or meet a challenge. Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

1.1Identify and explain the steps of the engineering design process: identify the problem, research the problem, develop possible solutions, select the best possible solution(s), construct prototypes and/or models, test and evaluate, communicate the solutions, and redesign. Identify the problem Research the problem Develop solutions Select the best solution Construct a prototype Test and evaluate Communicate the solutions Redesign Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

Identify the problem Identify the problem in need of a solution. Write down the original problem here. We have to build a robot that can travel twenty feet and back in little as time as possible. Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

Research the problem Examine the current state of the issues and current solutions. Student: Describe what you discovered or learned. We discovered that to make the robot go We discovered to make the robot to move fast that we need to put gears on the robot to help it build speed. Explore other options via the internet Student: List the internet sites that were helpful. drgraeme.net/DrGraeme-free-NXT-G-tutorials/Ch30/.../default.htm‎ Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

Develop solutions Brainstorm Student: Produce three ideas and articulate in goanimate.com 1.Make the robot lower to the ground to make it go faster. 2. Try to use less parts, but use enough to have the robot work 3. Have the robot be long.

Select the best Possible solution(s) Student: Describe which solution(s) best meet the need or solve the problem. Have the robot be long and low. Also, put gears on the wheels to make it travel faster. Capture the conversation in GoAnimate.com Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

Construct a prototype Student: Build a robot with your nxt lego kit Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

Test and Evaluate the solution(s) Does it work? Yes the robot works Does it meet the original design constraints? It does meet the original design constraints Can it be manufactured? Yes it can be manufactured Is it safe? Yes, the robot is safe What happens to the products when its useful life is finished? They go back in the box Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006 Use GoAnimate.com to respond to the questions

Communicate the solution(s) Describe how the solution(s) best meet(s) the initial need or problem. Well, the finished robot works really good. We figured to put more gears on the make the robot travel faster And it worked. Luckily our robot was not the slowest one. Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006 Publish your GoAnimate video!

Communicate the solution(s) Part two Describe the social impacts and tradeoffs of the solution. Communicating the solutions with the group wasn’t hard. We all had different solutions for the robot. Some people wanted more gears and others didn’t. But, in the end everybody Had the same idea’s. Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

Communicate the solution(s) Part three Complete the Self-Assessment activity. I was thinking if we put more gears on the robot it would Have the robot travel faster. Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

Redesign Overhaul the solution(s) based on information gathered during testing and self-assessment activity. If we redesigned the robot I think we should build the robot lower to the ground Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006
