4 How did it work out for former slaves? Haiti – only place where land was redistributed US – Sharecropping Africa – internal slavery continued Russia – still poor and mad Caribbean, Peru, South Africa, Hawaii, Malaya indentured servitude From Inia and China

5 Slavery in the Islamic World Begins to loose favor because of Quran No popular grassroots movement Gradually outlawed in the 20 th century because of international pressure

7 Feminist Beginnings Enlightenment and equality Mary Wollstonecraft – influenced by French Rev.

8 Industrialization creates opportunity Or at least a change in venue The daily grind vs. textile factory jobs Middle class develops Seneca Falls, New York 1848 – first organized expression of women’s rights Elizabeth Cady Stanton – Declaration of Sentiments Similar efforts began to arise in both England and France Women even began to wear pants under their skirts

9 Progress – 1900 A few universities had opened up to women Some states in USA allowed women to own and manage property Few more jobs – nursing, social work and teaching Nightingale – Nursing Jane Adams – social work New Zealand – first country to allow voting rights

11 Non western suffrage The idea did spread but with mixed results Is it seen as a development from the hated west? Ex. 13 Why the shift from community? Science weakens the hold of religion Industrialization causes migration Printing press standardized languages and dialects

14 Why? Different reasons for different locations U.S.A and France – Re public “We the People”

15 Racism as a reason for nationalism Germany and Italy – Unify Greeks and Serbs want independence from Ottomans Czechs and Hungarians want out of Austrian rule Poles and Ukrainians become more aware of oppression Irish want out of British rule Jewish people want an area of Palestine
