foreshadowing Foreshadowing is an advance sign, clue, hint or warning of what is to come in the future. Foreshadowing is used as a literary device to tease readers about plot turns that will occur later in the story.

suspense A feeling of curiosity, uncertainty or anxiety about the outcome of events in a literary work. An author creates suspense to maintain the attention of his or her reader. Often used in conjunction with foreshadowing
