Three Kinds of Irony Situational Dramatic Verbal

Situational Irony an event turns out to be the exact opposite of what the reader expects EX: a homeowner buys a gun to protect himself, but a criminal breaks into the house and uses that same weapon to injure the homeowner

Dramatic Irony the reader knows something that the character does not know EX: the audience sees the killer waiting behind the door, but the character does not know, so she proceeds down the hallway as if there is no danger, which creates tension and anxiety (suspense) for the audience

Verbal Irony spoken words that mean something different than what the person is actually saying, an intentional lie, sarcasm EX: “Thanks for the ticket officer you just made my day!” EX: “I can’t wait to read the seven hundred page report.”
