Guidelines for the design and implementation of rules and procedures :
Establish rules and procedures at the beginning of the year but be sure to review when rules and procedures must be altered Rules establish expectations or standards of behavior Procedures describe those behaviors that help students realize the rules Rules and procedures are more effective if students have input Classroom meetings about rules and procedures have a positive effect

Interact with students about classroom rules and procedures
Best to discuss rules and procedures at beginning of school year. You should explain expectations to students and discuss the logic and importance of the expectations. One option is to present the rules and expectations to students then ask for student input to modify them The highest level of student involvement is student generated rules and procedures

Periodically review rules and procedures and make necessary changes
Useful in promoting student ownership of behavior Review of rules/class discussion can be more useful than negative consequences for breaking or ignoring rules Based on student input rules could be suspended and reevaluated (ex. raising hand to speak, chewing gum) Best to discuss rules and procedures at beginning of school year.
