1. Maths Investigation

2. Ranfurly Primary has decided to tile an area in the Art room. The area to be tiled is 4 metres long and 3 metres wide. You have been chosen to design the tile pattern and to find out how much it will cost to have Toby the Tiler lay the tiles.

3.  Make a square metre with butcher’s paper.  Mark out on the ground the space that is to be tiled and find out the area of the space. (Use chalk or masking tape)  Draw a plan of the space to be tiled.  Design your tile pattern using two- dimensional shapes. (You may use pattern blocks to help you.) Try to use more than one shape to make your pattern more interesting.  Draw your pattern on your square metre of butcher’s paper. Copy it into your books – you may use your netbooks to draw your design.

4.  Find out how many tiles you will need to tile the whole area.  Show this information in a table: ◦ the different shapes of tiles you require ◦ the number of each shape you require

6.  Toby the Tiler can lay 4 tiles in 5 minutes. He charges $60 per hour.  1. Calculate how much time Toby requires to complete the job.  2. Calculate the labour costs for Toby.  3. Find the total cost of the materials and the labour.
