Public Sector Equality Duty The Equality Duty (Equality Act 2010) is a duty on public bodies and others carrying out public functions. It ensures that public bodies consider the needs of all individuals in their day to day work – in shaping policy, in delivering services, and in relation to their own employees.

How does it work? It requires SCAS to:- eliminate unlawful discrimination advance equality of opportunity foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it.

What are protected characteristics? Age Gender Disability Religion/Belief Ethnicity Sexual Orientation Pregnancy and maternity Gender reassignment Marriage and civil partnerships

How do we achieve this? Robust Strategy Good governance Meaningful community engagement (patient forums, grading and objectives set by communities)

Specific duty (Equality Act 2010) Publish strategy every 4 years Publish appropriate information annually (workforce and patient) Publish objectives achieved annually
