6 Community Participation why and how Public participation of Arctic communities is critical for success. But how do you ensure meaningful participation mechanisms that not only give voice to the communities but ensure their input and knowledge is incorporated? Importance of participation Questions and challenges Alaska Regional Planning Body -Establishing sub-regions? -CMSP priorities and objectives -Identifying existing efforts and building blocks -How do you represent everyone? -How do you balance voices? - When and where to hold meetings, and how to give notice? Arctic Strategic Action Plan -Identifying regional concerns, needs, and priorities -Developing appropriate approaches and timelines -How is input incorporated? -What are long-term participation and consultation mechanisms? National Information Mgmt System -Little scientific knowledge of Arctic ecosystems -LTK is critical to increasing understanding -How do you systematically integrate science and LTK? -Different processes for NIMS versus general consultation?
