doc.:IEEE802.11-08/0821r3 Submission July 2008 Minho Cheong, ETRISlide 2 Abstract This contribution proposes the changes to the current below 6 GHz PAR, 0807r1.

doc.:IEEE802.11-08/0821r3 Submission VHT below 6 GHz PAR from 0807r1 5.2 Scope of Proposed Standard: The scope of this project is to define an amendment that shall define standardized modifications to both the 802.11 physical layers (PHY) and the 802.11 Medium Access Control Layer (MAC) so that modes of operation can be enabled that are capable of supporting: o A maximum multi-station (STA) throughput (measured at the MAC data service access point), of at least 1 Gbps and a maximum single link throughput (measured at the MAC data service access point), of at least 500 Mbps. o Below 6 GHz carrier frequency operation excluding 2.4 GHz operation and ensuring backward compatibility and coexistence with legacy IEEE802.11a/n devices in the 5 GHz unlicensed band.

doc.:IEEE802.11-08/0821r3 Submission ITU-R Requirement for IMT-Advanced In Chapter 4.2.1. Objectives of IMT. Tech M.1645 (Vision Document, 2003) –New capabilities of systems beyond IMT-2000: –For systems beyond IMT-2000, there may be a requirement for a new wireless access technology for the terrestrial component, around the year 2010. This will complement the enhanced IMT- 2000 systems and the other radio systems. It is predicted that potential new radio interface(s) will need to support data rates of up to approximately 100 Mbit/s for high mobility such as mobile access and up to approximately 1 Gbit/s for low mobility such as nomadic/local wireless access, by around the year 2010.

doc.:IEEE802.11-08/0821r3 Submission Recent Update of ITU-R Requirement for IMT-Advanced DRAFT Report on Requirements related to technical system performance for IMT-Advanced Radio interface(s) [IMT.TECH] –R07-WP5D-080624-TD-0089 (Dubai, June 2008) 4.2. Peak Spectral Efficiency The peak spectral efficiency is the highest theoretical data rate (normalised by bandwidth), which is the received data bits assuming error-free conditions assignable to a single mobile station, when all available radio resources for the corresponding link direction are utilised (that is excluding radio resources that are used for physical layer synchronisation, reference signals or pilots, guard bands and guard times). The minimum requirements for peak spectral efficiencies are as follows: Downlink peak spectral efficiency is 15 bits/s/Hz Uplink peak spectral efficiency is 6.75 bits/s/Hz

doc.:IEEE802.11-08/0821r3 Submission Recent Update of ITU-R Requirement for IMT-Advanced (2) MAC SAP throughput for single station (DL) following the ITU-R Requirement –With 80 MHz BW, PHY data rate should be 1.2 Gbps + α 1 (80 MHz x 15 bps/Hz = 1.2 Gbps) –Then, Single Link MAC SAP throughput can be calculated as: 768 + α 2 Mbps (when MAC efficiency is 64% by referencing 307r1) because the “data rate” in the previous page is smaller than the conventional PHY data rate. So, α n denotes the additional throughput depending on the pilot signal overhead.

doc.:IEEE802.11-08/0821r3 Submission Conclusion VHT in IEEE 802.11 is targeting for the IMT-Advanced. However, the current below 6 GHz PAR does not meet the recent IMT-Advanced requirement specially regarding the single link throughput.

doc.:IEEE802.11-08/0821r3 Submission Proposal Apply the following changes to the 0807r1. –Opt 1) Increase the single link throughput of at least 800 Mbps –Opt 2) 1 Gbps MAC SAP throughput regardless of the number of STAs (60 GHz PAR requirement) –Opt 3) Add the single link throughput of at least 800 Mbps requirement to meet the IMT-Advanced requirement
