Atoms and molecules S1 Chemistry Introduction to Chemistry
2
Learning outcomesSuccess criteria Understand what atoms and molecules are. You can define the term “atom”. You can define the term “molecule”. You can draw diagrams to illustrate atoms and molecules. You can recognise if a substance is made up of atoms or molecules from a diagram.
3
Atoms The smallest type of particles which make up all substances
4
Just how small? Write a word which includes the letter i. Look at the dot. How many atoms do you think are in that? The answer: about 100, 000, 000, 000, 000. That’s 100 million million, or one trillion.
5
Facts about a trillion It would take you about 30 000 years to count to a trillion. If you stacked a trillion pound coins on top of each other, you would have a tower which reaches to just past the moon.
6
Molecules Two or more atoms bonded together
7
Molecules are small too! Fact: there are more molecules in an average sized glass of water than there are litres of water in the whole of the Earth’s oceans.
