1 Power Quality: A Nonlinear Adaptive Filter for Improved Power System Operation and Protection Research Overview: Focuses on the application of a new algorithm to improve power system operation Power quality issues of concern –Need for voltage amplitude, frequency and phase matching, to ensure proper integration –Need for real-time tracking of these parameters Nonlinear Filter Algorithm Summary: Non-linear, adaptive Capable of tracking amplitude, phase and frequency of a sinusoid in real time Work in Progress: Applications to renewable energy in the following applications: Grid integration Voltage Control Frequency control Sag Analysis Active Filtering Power Systems

2 Algorithm Sag Analysis Matlab implementation Capable of tracking amplitude A(t), phase and frequency of a sinusoid in real time Application to Sag Detection: Faster response than current methods of Fourier, RMS and peak voltage Suitable when mitigation is required Power Systems

3 Dips Classification using Wavelets Background: –Most power quality standards consider only magnitude and duration when classifying dips, e.g., IEC-61000-4-11, NRS0482:2004 –Inadequate definition considering that certain drives are also sensitive to voltage changes –Some classification algorithms tested in South Africa resulted in a worst case accuracy of 50-80% Research Objectives: –Devise a new classification algorithm using Wavelet Theory and Pattern Recognition Techniques

4 Impacts of Alternate Energy Sources on Power Systems Stability Research Objectives: –Recommend appropriate models of wind and solar systems for reliability and security studies –Run computer simulations of wind and solar systems to access their impacts on power systems reliability and security –Validate simulations results using Real Time Power System Simulator (RTPS) –Model a small Eskom network (e.g., Western Cape) to assess the impact of these sources on the systems reliability and security using RTPS –Validate models with measurements Power Systems
