READING Environment should be rich in reading materials-signs, labels, Environment should be rich in books Stages of early shared book reading: –Belief that words are imbedded in pictures –Belief that words are read to form the story –Memorization of words seen as “reading” –Beginning to find meanings in letters, words

PROMOTING LITERACY When learning to read: Imbedded reading strategies are useful Explicit reading strategies are required by most children 1.Read daily: Group and individual read-aloud by the teacher Teacher asks for predictions

CULTURAL VARIATIONS IN EMERGENT LITERACY Some cultures emphasize verbal story- telling Some cultures emphasize drama, dance, art Some cultures emphasize “casual” reading material over books

ADDRESSING LANGUAGE & LITERACY DELAYS Develop a language-rich environment Have access to speech therapy services To promote phonology: rhymes, poems, tongue twisters, songs, To promote semantics:integrate vocab. dev. throughout the day To promote syntax: Encourage expansion of child’s language into full sentences
