Global 1.0 - 16 Sept 2015 EQ: How did the foundations of Civilization (Prehistory–3000 B.C.E.) help create our modern society? LO: wwbat assess the beginnings of civilization and its impact on modern society. Do Now: Why did ending a nomadic life lead to modern cities like NYC?

1 Eight aspects of civilization - cities, government, religions, job specialization, social classes, arts/architecture, public works, and writing. civilization = complex highly organized social order. Nomads did not have complex societies.

2 The expansion into territory beyond the boundaries of a city created a city-state. An empire is a group of states or territories controlled by one ruler. City people were ranked according to their jobs, which led to the growth of social classes. Artisans were skilled craftspeople

3 Cultural diffusion - spread of ideas, customs, and technologies from one people to another. Interaction among the various civilizations often brought about cultural change. Nomadic herders crossed the dry grasslands called steppes. Pictographs - simple drawings of the objects they represented. As writing became more complex it could only be done by scribes
