4 Sign Ups  Sign up sheets for parties, field day and library helpers.  Please sign up for fall and spring conferences. Reminder papers are next to the sheets.  Donations from the Giving Tree  Tissues

5 Communication  Change in Dismissal- Please send me a note in the morning if there is a change in dismissal. I will send the note to the office. If there is a change during the day, please call the office, they will notify me before the end of the day. Please don’t email or call me with dismissal changes.  I will return phone calls as soon as possible.  Email- basic questions  Please check Concord’s website for information.

6 Mathematics  Second Grade Math CurriculumMath Curriculum  enVision Our curriculum is aligned to the new PA Standards for Mathematics. The focus for primary students will be to develop a strong understanding of numbers, master addition and subtraction facts and concepts, and develop the ability to manipulate geometric shapes. In all grades, emphasis will be placed on reasoning, problem solving, modeling, decision making, and engagement in mathematics. Written explanations that show understanding are an essential part of the math curriculum.  Rocket Math

7 Rocket Math Basic Fact Practice Rocket Math Demonstration

8 Language Arts Guided Reading  Reading Curriculum Reading Curriculum  Use a variety of fiction and non fiction literature  Flexible grouping and differentiated instruction to increase comprehension, word identification and phonics skills

9 Language Arts Writing  Implementation of the Writing Process.  Encouraged to write different types of writing: narrative, persuasive and informational.  Mini lessons that focus on grammar and writing skills.

10 100 Book Challenge Independent Reading  Read books for 15 minutes, twice a day.  Need to read 13 lines a week to reach the goal of 500 lines a year.  Reading at their “just right level.”  Will not cover as many levels as in first grade.  Use the skills card once a week.  Raz Kids-can use for 100 Book Challenge

11 Science  Main topics covered in second grade:  Balancing and Weighing  Changes-changing states of matter  The Life Cycle of a Butterfly  Energy will be taught as part of our Earth Week Activities

12 Social Studies  Main Topics covered in second grade:  Communities  Map skills  Goods and services  Being a good citizen

13 Handwriting  Encourage the students to write neatly when doing any assignment, including homework  Students will begin learning cursive writing starting in January.  They should not use cursive writing until all of the letters are taught.

14 Technology  Ipads- used in the classroom ****Please send in headphones for the iPads  Computer lab is now called: CES Collaboration and Innovation Lab  Working with the technology coaches to implement some newer programs.

15 Homework  Written homework will usually be given Monday through Thursday and should take about 20 -30 minutes.  Reading for 100 Book Challenge is a daily assignment, including the weekend. Students should read for 15 minutes each day.  Rocket Math is a daily assignment if students don’t pass their level.

18 Birthdays  If you would like to send in a small treat for your child’s birthday, please let me know a day or two in advance. Don’t forget the napkins. We have 19 students.  If your child has a summer birthday, you can celebrate his/her half birthday or celebrate it in June.  Send invitations to school only if the whole class(or all the girls or all the boys) are being invited to a birthday party.
