The New Deal Does Too Much Many Republicans, esp. the wealthy, felt that the New Deal did too much ◦Programs such as the TVA and rural electrification were socialistic ◦The Second New Deal pushed through a series of higher taxes aimed at the rich including the Revenue Act of 1935 which raised the tax rate on individual incomes over $50,000 ◦FDR’s enemies claimed the Social Security Act penalized successful, hardworking people by forcing them to pay into the system ◦Others saw the assignment of Social Security numbers as the first step toward a militaristic, regimented society

The New Deal Does Too Much American Liberty League, headed by Alfred E. Smith spearheaded opposition to the New Deal arguing that it limited individual freedom in an unconstitutional, “un-American” manner smacking of Bolshevism

The New Deal Does Not Do Enough Progressives and socialists claimed that the New Deal did not do enough They believed that the nation’s entire economic system needed to be reformed in order to cure what he believed to be a permanent crisis.

A Legacy of Hope Restored a sense of hope to the people People began to look to their government for support and government programs did mean the difference between survival and starvation for millions of Americans
