2 What you will learn? Definition Uses of articulator
Requirements of articulators Classification of articulator Care & maintenance

3 What is dental articulator?
DSP 231 Articulators What is dental articulator? They are the mechanical analogues of the TMJ & upper & lower arches, a device to which upper and lower cast is attached, with an intension to stimulate functional & para-functional contact relationship of the arches.

4 DSP 231 Articulators Definition A mechanical instrument that represents the temporomandibular joints (TMJ) and jaws, to which maxillary and mandibular casts may be attached to simulate some or all mandibular movements.

5 DSP 231 Articulators Requirements : It should hold casts in correct horizontal and vertical relationship. It should provide a positive anterior vertical stop (incisal pin).

6 DSP 231 Articulators Requirements : It should accept a face bow transfer record utilizing anterior reference point. It should open and close in a hinge movement. It should allow protrusive and lateral jaw motion.

7 DSP 231 Articulators Requirements : The moving parts should not move freely and be accurately machined. The non-moving parts should be a rigid construction made of non corrosive material. The patient casts must be easily removable and attachable to the articulator without loosing their correct horizontal and vertical relationship.

8 Uses of Articulator : Primary purpose:
DSP 231 Articulators Uses of Articulator : Primary purpose: To hold opposing casts in a predetermined fixed relationship. To open and close. To produce border and inter-border diagnostic sliding motions of the teeth similar to these in the mouth.

9 Uses of Articulator : Other purpose:
DSP 231 Articulators Uses of Articulator : Other purpose: To diagnose dental occlusal conditions. To plan dental procedures or treatment plan.

10 Uses of Articulator : Other purpose:
DSP 231 Articulators Uses of Articulator : Other purpose: To aid in fabrication of dental restorations and lost dental parts. Helpful in teaching and studying of occlusion and mandibular movements.

11 Classification of Articulator :
DSP 231 Articulators Classification of Articulator : Class I : Articulators (Non-adjustable) Class II : Articulators (Average value) Class III : Articulators ( Semi-adjustable) Class IV : Articulators (Fully-adjustable)

12 Class I Articulator (Non-adjustable):
DSP 231 Articulators Class I Articulator (Non-adjustable): Capable of accepting single static registration. No mandibular movement except opening and closing. Commonly called as “hinge articulator” Only represent one relation i.e centric occlusion.

13 Class II Articulator (Average value):
DSP 231 Articulators Class II Articulator (Average value): ‘Mean Value Articulator’. Permits horizontal as well as vertical motion but does not orient the motion of TMJ. Fixed condylar path, Fixed intercondylar distance. Some models allow to use face-bow. Bonwill triangle

14 Class III Articulator (Semi-adjustable):
DSP 231 Articulators Class III Articulator (Semi-adjustable): condylar guidance Stimulate condylar pathway by using average or mechanical equivalent for all part of motion. Adjustable condylar guidance. Adjustable insical guide table. Accept both centric & eccentric relation. Incisal table condylar guidance Incisal table

15 Class III Articulator (Semi-adjustable):
Non arcon Arcon

16 Class III Articulator (Semi-adjustable):
DSP 231 Articulators Class III Articulator (Semi-adjustable): Non arcon Arcon

17 Class III Articulator (Semi-adjustable):
DSP 231 Articulators Class III Articulator (Semi-adjustable): Hanau H series semi-adjustable articulators: Accept only protrusive record. Lateral condylar guidance (L) = H + 12 8

18 Class IV Articulator (Fully-adjustable):
DSP 231 Articulators Class IV Articulator (Fully-adjustable): Accepts three dimensional (horizontal, sagittal & frontal plane) dynamic registration. Stimulates mandibular movements. And Arcon type. Adjustable Intercondylar distance

19 Class IV Articulator (Fully-adjustable):
DSP 231 Articulators Class IV Articulator (Fully-adjustable): Used with Kinematic face bow only More accurate restorations E.g : 1.Staurt articulator 2.Denar articulator 1.Staurt articulator

20 DSP 231 Articulators Care & Maintannace Lubrication Cleaning Storage

21 Face bows A calliper like instrument used to record the spatial relationship of the maxillary arch to some anatomic reference point or points and then transfer this relationship to an articulator; it orients the dental cast in the same relationship to the opening axis of articulator.

22 Types of Face bows Arbitrary face-bow Kinematic (hinge bow)
