2 In July 2007, Hillcrest, Erinbank and Broadmeadows Secondary College merged to become Hume Central Secondary College. This is the story of how the School Improvement Group has integrated its role in the development of Hume Central Secondary College.

3 At Hume Central Secondary College, the School Improvement Group (SIG) is the team that meets on a regular basis and works together across campuses. Professional leave has enabled members more time and flexibility.

6 BY Developing Teacher Knowledge in the following interrelated and overlapping areas : Personalised Learning Inquiry Based Learning Student Engagement Literacy Numeracy Assessment and use of data THROUGH THE USE OF Collaborative Learning Processes Learning Teams Learning through action research Professional reading PD Coaching and giving/receiving feedback Learning walks Recognising, building on and celebrating successes DATA ACCOUNTABILITY -Curriculum documentation - PRPs – demonstrated use of data and evidence of professional learning and inquiry into practice

7 Each of the SIG members are paired with a Team Leader to work on Literacy strategies in the classroom. Team Leaders then present to their Learning Team. Team Leader then works with another Team Member to share the strategies learnt. This process continues until all staff have worked with a mentor/coach.

8 Student Development Management is being rolled out in term 4 to Year Level Team Coordinators whose main role is Welfare and Discipline. The process will be a Teacher Learning Circle facilitated by members of the SIG.

9  Guaranteed and Viable Learning  Student Level Factors  Instructional Strategies Implementation of Academic Vocabulary and SSR (sustained silent reading) at Year 7 & 8 in Term 4. This creates links with John Munro (SIG training).

10  Compulsory for all staff to have a Literacy Specific Goal on their Performance Review Plan.  SIG provided a range of strategies and data collection tools to support staff literacy goals.

16 Efficacy I can explain the curriculum focus & intent and how to design exemplar curriculum Responsibility I am responsible for the curriculum I teach - and I know how to deliver it! Accountability I can demonstrate why this really is the best taught curriculum in the state, the country, the world? Ownership I have made the effort to work with my team to develop this curriculum – it is our work for Hume Central students
