Using iPads and Software to Differentiate for Students With Complex Learning Needs Nicole Gonari, Speech-Language Pathologist/AT Consultant Andra Thorstad, RUH Hospital/Homebound Teacher

Today’s presentation  The purpose of this presentation is to highlight and discuss specific iPad apps and accessibility features that can be used to enhance learning in students with complex learning needs.  This 60-minute session is most relevant for elementary classroom teachers, resource room teachers and special education consultants.

iPad in Special Education  As teachers and consultants who serve children with complex and diverse learning needs, we have many tools in our toolbox that we use to differentiate for students, to help meet goals on IIPs, and to support inclusive practices.  The iPad is one of many tools that we can use to help achieve these goals, and is generally a popular choice amongst materials in our resource rooms and classrooms.

iPad Built-In Accessibility Features 1. Dictation/Speech Recognition 2. Speak Selection/Text To Speech 3. Keyboard shortcuts 4. Restrictions and Safari Restrictions 5. Guided Access

Feature #1: Voice Dictation- Speech to Text On iPad 3 or newer, you can use speech recognition in any text box, using the onscreen keyboard, as long as you are connected to the Internet and have activated this feature. To use Dictation, you need: - An iPad 3 or newer - An Internet Connection - Access to onscreen keyboard

Enable Dictation General  Keyboards  Enable Dictation  Turn on Alternatively: General  Siri  On

To Use Dictation: 1. Tap where you want to enter text (i.e. text box or URL)- the onscreen keyboard will pop up. 2. Tap the Microphone

To Use Dictation (continued): 3. Talk 4. Press ‘Done’

When to use Dictation/Speech Recognition…  In text boxes on the Internet (Safari or other browser)  In a game that requires text input (i.e. Scribblenauts)  To take notes  To write an email  To answer questions on a test

Alternative for iPad 1 & 2: Dragon Dictation Dragon Dictation: - A free speech recognition app that converts your spoken words to text. - Open the app, press record, and speak! - You can highlight the text and copy it to another app. - Notes - Email - Twitter and Facebook - Safari (Internet)

Built-In Feature #2: Speak Selection Go to Settings

Find General on the left-hand side of the screen.

Find ‘Accessibility’

Click on ‘Speech’.

Speak selection: A speak button will appear when you select text. Speak screen: Swipe down with two fingers from the top of the screen to hear the content of the screen. You can pause if need be. Voices: You can download voices to speak text in other languages. Please not that you cannot use this feature to translate between languages.

Speaking rate: This allows a user to adjust the rate at which text is read aloud. Highlight content: This features allows for words to be highlighted as they are spoken aloud. This can be helpful for students with tracking difficulties. Speak Auto-Text: This feature automatically speaks auto-corrections and auto- capitalizations.

In almost any app with text that can be highlighted (HTML, not in picture format), you can highlight the text and press ‘Speak’ to have the text read out loud. If there is more than one language represented on the page, there will be an ellipsis after ‘Speak’; you can choose which detected language to have the words spoken aloud.

Feature #4: Restrictions

Set a restrictions passcode. Don’t forget your restrictions passcode!

Restrictions are helpful to help protect your students as well as your device. This can be beneficial for students who are highly distracted by certain features of the iPad, or who may accidentally delete apps without knowing it

Feature #4B: Safari Restrictions  We are still in Restrictions

Click on ‘Websites’ to enable restrictions.

You can choose a general type of restriction: All websites: No restrictions whatsoever

Limit Adult Content: This limits access to many adult sites automatically. You can add or restrict specific websites if need be. Always allow: These are ‘whitelisted’ websites that the user is always able to access. Never allow: These are ‘blacklisted’ websites that the user is not able to access.

Specific websites only: When you choose this option, the user is ONLY able to access the websites specified below. All other websites are blocked unless the restrictions passcode is entered. To delete websites from the list, press Edit (top right hand corner) and select websites to be deleted by pressing the red circle next to the site.

Example of trying to access a certain site that was not added to the ‘whitelist’ of acceptable websites. The user can access the website only by pressing ‘Allow Website’ and entering the restrictions passcode.

Feature #5: Guided Access  ‘Locks’ a user into an app- a passcode is needed to get out  Good for students who are ‘easily distracted’ or attempt to avoid a task by pressing the home button to switch apps  Good for students who are in ‘test-taking mode’!  Only available for iOS 6 and up.

10 Tried and True Mobile Applications

1. Notability: $3.49  Note-taking and highlighting: If a student is unable to copy from the board (learning disability; processing speed issues, working memory issues), a teacher can convert the notes to PDF, send it to the iPad, and the student can follow along (highlighting, adding in his own notes, etc).  Adapting other resources

2. Whiteboard Apps  Valuable tool for students who struggle with literacy, basic writing/reading skills  Teachers can have a corner of the classroom dedicated to explanations  Students with processing issues, with working memory problems, or who just need the lesson or instructions repeated several times can independently go to the iPad and find the directions.  Students can show what they know in a different way. Students who experience difficulty with writing, but who have strong verbal skills, can use whiteboard apps to explain what they know while providing visual supports and pictures.  Students can be assigned to create a ‘mini-lesson’ explaining what they know to a peer- can set up a class group (need an account!).  Can send lessons via email to students or parents

Microsoft Office Apps: Using Office 365  This service is being provided through the Provincial Agreement between the Government and Microsoft Canada. Potentially every student in the province can or will have an Office 365 account. Please consult your school division for more details.  If a student has a Microsoft Office 365 subscription, you may view, create, edit, or save documents via core and premium features subject to terms and conditions. You may use and install copies of the application on iOS devices you own or control.  If a student owns an iPad or iPhone (or Android device), he or she could take a test or complete an assignment using Microsoft Word on his or her own personal device that he or she controls.

Practical Application of MS Office Apps  Teacher creates exam in Microsoft Word  Teacher sends the exam via email to the student  Student opens up email on the iDevice and opens test using Microsoft Word  Student completes test using text to speech and/or speech recognition features  Student saves test  Student sends test back to teacher  Teacher grades test
