1 Do Now: Follow instructions from Ms. Ryan
Aim: How do we review translating English phrases into algebraic expressions and equations? Do Now: Follow instructions from Ms. Ryan

2 Note taking: All powerpoints will be color coded as follows:
RED means COPY (write it down!) BLACK means READ YELLOW means READ and REFLECT BLUE means DO GREEN means NEW ASSIGNMENT (might need to be written down in your planners)

3 Homework review!

4 less than – reverses the order
5 less than b : b – 5

5 10 plus a number, times 8 How should this be written? How should the following be written: 10 plus a number times 8 Is there a difference?

6 Expressions Vs Equations
We know: Algebraic Expression is an phrase that contains one or more variables Equation- any math sentence using the verb “=” Ex: x + 5 = 3

7 Equation or expression? Together!
X = 5y

8 Equation or expression?
5 – 10 = y 3x -2 4x

9 Changing verbal sentences to equations – together!
1.The quotient of b and 9 is Twice b is 3 less than 2.

10 Practice The sum of a and 4 is 12. Three-fourths of a number is 5.

11 Inequalities Inequalities- a sentence with one of the verbs listed below. ≠ is not equal to ≤ is less than or equal to ≥ greater than or equal to ≈ is approximately equal to

12 Together! 2 is less than 3. The sum of t and u, divided by 6 is not equal to 3.

13 Practice The product of 5r and s is greater than or equal to 10.
The sum of t and u divided by 6 is 7. Twice the difference of 2 and x is 11.

14 Less than VS is less than VS Less
b less than a a - b Ex: 4 less than 5 5 - 4 b is less than a b >a Example: 4 is less than 5. 4 < 5 B less a B – a Example: 4 less 5 4 - 5

15 Together! x >3 2(n + 3) ≠ 5 100 – 2x ≤ 5

16 Write the following equations/inequalities into English sentences:
X ≥ 5 X + 5 ≈ 6 y ≠ 5 x – y = 4

17 On a separate sheet of paper with your first and last name on it, answer the following:
10 plus a number, divided by 2 Is there a difference between: and 10 plus a number divided by 2? Explain.
