Expressions to Phrases “The Language of Math”

What is our purpose????? The purpose of this lesson is to provide a link between Language and Math. Through the year we will be talking about math and creating equations from word problems. To do this effectively, we must be able to translate words in mathematical expressions.

Vocabulary Variable: a letter that stands for a value Algebraic expression: a mathematical sentence with at least one variable Numerical expression: a mathematical sentence with only numbers and operation symbols Translating Expressions: writing algebraic expressions from word phrases. This lesson focuses on using language to create algebraic expressions.

.... language and math???? Words show us what operation to use. What do you think of when you hear Sum? Difference? In all? More than? What is your objective today??? We are using language to create math.

__________________________________________ PhraseOperationWrite it.... Three dollars more than the cost c Addition Twelve pencils decreased by a number n Subtraction Five times a distance dMultiplication a apples divided by 4Division Five less than 3 times an amount x Multiplication and subtraction 3 + c 12 - n 5d Look for words that show the operation we should use. We will write an expression for each example. Let’s try this set together. We are taking words and writing expressions!

Certain words mean certain operations. __________________________________________ OperationSay it.....Write it..... Addition words: totalThe total of 8 and a number8 + n more than5 more than a number increased byA number increased by 12 the sum ofThe sum of 4 and a number Multiplication words: the product of The product of 4 and a number times6 times a number groups of5 groups of 7 Division words: quotient * (order matters!!!!) The quotient of 12 and a number Divided byA number divided by 8 5 + n n + 12 4+ n 4n 6 n 5 (7) 12÷ n n÷ 8

There are more.... Subtraction words THIS IS A BIG DEAL!!!! SAME ORDER.... difference in The difference in 12 and a number 12 - n decreased byA number decreased by 5 minus7 minus a number take away More?? 4 take away 3 Backwards words.. less than5 less than 77 - 5 fewer than9 fewer than a number subtracted from More?? A number subtracted from 12 n - 5 7 - n n - 9 12 - n 4-3

Complete these as you discuss the work with your group. 1. The difference of a number t and 22___________ 2. m bicycles added to 18 bicycles _________________ 3. 11 times a number____________________ 4. 4 less than 5 times a number g______________ 5. What is the variable in 8y? ___________________ 6. n more students than the 8 students in each of the three rows ________________________ t - 22 m + 18 11n 5g - 4 y 8(3) + n

Will we use this??? Absolutely! This year you will learn to write expressions that represent the problems you are solving! “Listen” to the words you are given in your work this year……words tell you the operation you need to find your solutions!

We wrote phrases for algebraic expressions. We translated expressions into phrases. Tonight’s homework will practice this skill!
