Translating Verbal Statements into Algebraic Equations

Example #1 The product of 8 and x plus 2 is equal to 34. 8x + 2 = 34

Example #2 Six less than double n results in 30. 2n – 6 = 30

Example #3 Mary has one more than triple the number of Rex’s baseball cards, x. Mary has 70 cards. 3x + 1 = 70

Example #4 The interior angles in a triangle measure 2x o, 5x o, and 61 o. The sum of the interior angles in a triangle is 180 o. 2x + 5x + 61 = 180 5x o 2x o 61 o

Example #5 Mr. Donovan bought a new car that cost $14,520. He paid a down payment of $3,000 and $320 each month. In how many months, x, did Mr. Donovan pay off the car? 320x + 3000 = 14520 monthly payments + down payment = total cost
