Speed, Velocity and Acceleration

TEKS 8.6A demonstrate and calculate how unbalanced forces change the speed or direction of an object’s motion TEKS 8.6B differentiate between speed, velocity and acceleration

Motion is a change in position relative to another object. Uniform motion - constant speed in a straight line Accelerated motion – motion that is changing in speed or direction

How fast an object is moving is called speed.

Speed is how far something travels (distance) in a given amount of time.

The formula for finding speed is Speed= distance time

The unit for speed is meters or kilometers (distance) and seconds or hours (time).

It looks like this: m/sec or km/hr

Sometimes, it is important to know the speed and direction an object is traveling.

Velocity is the term used when referring to the speed and a direction.

So, you might say the car is traveling at 50 km/hr, north.

Vectors can be used to show the direction of an object’s motion.

Which of these shows and which 25 m/sec 67 m/sec south 90 km/sec 13 km/sec speed velocity?

Acceleration

When a force is applied to a moving object, the object can speed up, slow down, come to a stop or change direction.

When a force changes the speed, direction or both of an object, we are changing the velocity of the object.

A change in velocity is called acceleration.

This is the change in velocity over a given period of time.

The formula for acceleration is acceleration = velocity time

Acceleration is measured meters per second per second or m/sec 2

An object falling to earth is subject to a change in acceleration of 9.8 m/s 2 due to gravity.

Examples of acceleration are…. stepping on the brakes

pedaling your bicycle faster

dropping your lunch tray to the floor…

a dog chasing its tail

a roller coaster climbing to the top of a hill.

Potential vs. Kinetic Energy Notes TEKS 6.8A compare and contrast potential and kinetic energy

Energy is the ability to do work or cause change.

Law of Conservation of Energy states that energy cannot be created or destroyed.

Two types of energy…

Potential energy is energy that is stored, waiting to be released… it has the potential to do work.

Gravitational potential energy depends on an object’s position or height. more potential energy less potential energy

Chemical energy is stored in the chemical bonds of the compounds that hold substances together.

Kinetic energy is the energy of motion…

may be found in many forms such as… mechanical radiant (light) sound electrical thermal

Energy can be transformed or changed from one type to another.

Potential energy can be transformed into kinetic energy. potential energy kinetic energy

As an object’s kinetic energy increases the potential energy decreases.
