November 25, 2008 1.What are the three types of engine? 2.Where are steam engines primarily used today? 3.What is known as the capacity for doing work and overcoming resistance? U3b- L14 DRILL 1. Internal Combustion, External Combustion, Gas Turbine 2. Power plants 3. Energy

1.Humans and animals use ________ as energy source. 2.What is work? 3.What’s the equation for work? 4.Where is the power developed in an engine? 5.An engine turns _________ motion into _________ motion. U3b- L11 Flight Power Review Food Exertion of a force over a given distance. The cylinder W = F x D (Work = Force x Distance) LinearRotational

Sketch and label the components: W = P = R = C = V = U3b- L11 Flight Power Review Cylinder Wall Piston Connecting Rod Crankshaft Valves

What is engineering? What are the 5 major components to technological systems? Can you represent them in a flow chart? 7 inputs? 3 types of materials? 8 constraints? 4 design principles? Risk analysis, System, Criteria, Constraint, Prototype, Engineering Do you understand the 12 steps of the Design Process? U3b- L11 TEST REVIEW

Listen to instructions first, then get in action: Get your top and get into groups of 4. Designate a recorder and a reporter. Take turns spinning tops (you each get 3 spins total) The recorder times each spin and records it on a clean sheet of paper. When time is called (~5 minutes), reporters will report the longest-spinning top of the group. In front of the class, these top spinners will compete with 3 spins each. U3b- L14 “TOP THIS” Design Project

U3b- L14 “TOP THIS” Design Project

Complete the remaining two steps on your project worksheet. –Be sure to follow the grading rubric –Project worksheet (complete) –Your copy of the rubric (it should’ve been graded by a partner) Study for tomorrow’s test on U3a, U3b, and Flight Power U3b- L11 HOMEWORK
