1 Empowerment What do we mean by empowerment?
As a small group, you have 5 minutes to find out what empowerment is and be ready to explain it to the class. You should use your text book (p2 – p10) to find some helpful information to help you understand and be able to explain ‘empowerment’.

4 Empowerment When people are empowered they
have the ability to make choices and change their world. have a lot of control over their lives. have the authority to make important decisions and the power to carry them out.

5 Empowerment What is the difference between power and authority? (Use pages 5-7 to help you) Again, you may work in your small group with the purpose of collectively creating an answer you could share with the class. _________________________________________ Remember… it’s okay to not know, or to not be comfortable, or to not have energy, or to not be interested all of the time… but it’s not okay to not try!

6 Empowerment What is the difference between power and authority? (Use pages 5-7 to help you) Authority Gives a person the right to make decisions in a particular situation…usually affecting us. Examples: captain of a team, chairman of a committee, parents of children, teachers of students, legal authority (police officer) Power Authority gives people power! People in positions of authority have power over others. People with power need to use it responsibly

7 Empowerment Examples:
Authority Power Age of majority You become an adult in the eyes of the law. Minimum wage job You can earn decent money for yourself, your family. Driver’s License Freedom! You can get around on your own. Eligible to vote You have a say in who governs you.

- Learn/educate - Volunteer - Work - Know your rights and responsibilities - Know where to get help - Know and be proud of your heritage/culture - Make friends - Get involved

Unemployed seniors/elderly The homeless women People living in poverty Homosexuals (gays/lesbians) - Less than minimum wage teenagers Uneducated students children - disabilities - minorities

13 Empowerment In Grade 7, we will look at empowerment of people on a global scale along five broad themes: Economic Political Cultural Societal National And…we should always try to make connections and relate the idea of ‘empowerment’ back to Atlantic Canada. (How does this affect us? We live in Bedford!)

14 Empowerment What happens to people as they become empowered?
They are happier. They have hope. They feel valued. They have more confidence. They work harder. They feel accepted. They have a sense of purpose and set goals. They feel respect and give others respect. They want to help others to become empowered!
