ARE THERE ONLY TWO LETTERS TO THE CORINTHIANS? Paul possibly wrote a letter before 1 Corinthians (1 Cor. 5:9) and a letter between 1 & 2 Corinthians (2 Cor. 2:3-4) Therefore, there may exist as many as four Corinthian letters

Why is 2 CORINTHIANS necessary? Because some in the Corinthian church have not responded to his teaching, Paul pours out his heart concerning his ministry for Christ

1. Fragrance of Christ 2 Corinthians 2:15 For we are a fragrance of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing; 2 CORINTHIANS PAUL’S LOVE FOR HIS MINISTRY 1-7 2 CORINTHIANS PAUL’S LOVE FOR HIS MINISTRY 1-7 Paul uses four analogies to describe his feelings about ministry:

2 CORINTHIANS PAUL’S LOVE FOR HIS MINISTRY 1-7 2. Letter of Christ 2 Corinthians 3:3 being manifested that you are a letter of Christ, cared for by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone, but on tablets of human hearts.

Paul’s confidence= in Christ Paul’s competence= from God

Moses communicated Law. Paul dispenses grace.

v.6-8 So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight. Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord.

v.9-10 So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.

2 CORINTHIANS PAUL IS SOLID IN HIS MINISTRY 8-13 HIS DEDICATION TO GIVING THE EXAMPLE: MACEDONIAN CHURCHES 1. They gave with a gracious attitude 2. They gave despite their incredible poverty 3. They gave according to what they owned (not a fixed amount)

2 CORINTHIANS PAUL IS SOLID IN HIS MINISTRY 8-13 HIS DEDICATION TO GIVING GUIDELINES: 2 Corinthians 9:6-7 Now this I say, he who sows sparingly shall also reap sparingly; and he who sows bountifully shall also reap bountifully. Let each one do just as he has purposed in his heart; not grudgingly or under compulsion; for God loves a cheerful giver.

2 CORINTHIANS PAUL IS SOLID IN HIS MINISTRY 8-13 HIS DEDICATION TO GIVING GUIDELINES: 1. Give what you decide in your heart 2. Give willingly and cheerfully 3. Give with all trust GOD LOVES HIS CHILDREN. IF YOU GIVE UNDER COMPULSION THE OTHER PEOPLE HE LOVES ARE STILL HELPED. BUT GOD DESIRES YOUR FREE GIFTS SO THAT ALL ARE HELPED; THE NEEDY BY HIS PROVISION OF YOUR FAITH BUILDING TRUST.

v.17 “Let the one who boasts, boast in the LORD.” For it is not one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.

2 CORINTHIANS PAUL IS SOLID IN HIS MINISTRY 8-13 HIS DEDICATION TO SERVING PAUL’S PHYSICAL SUFFERINGS 39 lashes- 5 different times Beaten with rods- 3 different times Stoned (and lived!) Shipwrecked- 3 different times 24 hours adrift in the ocean Constant danger, exposure, hunger Internal pressure to care for the churches

2 CORINTHIANS PAUL IS SOLID IN HIS MINISTRY 8-13 HIS DEDICATION TO SERVING PAUL’S CONSTANT AFFLICTION: HIS “THORN IN THE FLESH”

2 CORINTHIANS PAUL IS SOLID IN HIS MINISTRY 8-13 2 Corinthians 12:7-10 And because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, for this reason, to keep me from exalting myself, there was given me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to buffet me-- to keep me from exalting myself! Concerning this I entreated the Lord three times that it might depart from me. And He has said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness." Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may dwell in me. Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ's sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong.

2 CORINTHIANS PAUL IS SOLID IN HIS MINISTRY 8-13 HIS DEDICATION TO SERVING PAUL’S CONSTANT AFFLICTION: HIS “THORN IN THE FLESH” - possibly poor eyesight, malaria, epilepsy, diabetes, migraine headaches, etc… - prayed on 3 occasions for an extended period of time - God’s answer: My grace is all you need, stay humble, I will be your strength!

NIV84- Goodbye. Aim for perfection. Listen to my appeal. NIV2010- Rejoice. Strive for full restoration. Encourage one another. ESV- Rejoice. Aim for restoration. Comfort one another. KJV- Farewell. Be perfect. Be of good comfort. NAS- Rejoice. Be made complete. Be comforted.
