1 More with Nouns Part 2

2 Common Nouns Does not name a specific person, place, thing, or idea.
They are very general. Examples: author detective assistant villain country city street

3 Identify the common noun
Stanton Middle School has lots of students in the building. Homework can sometimes be hard. I wish I was in bed right now sleeping.

4 Singular Nouns A singular noun names one person, place, thing, or idea. Example: My sister, Angie, is older than me. (sister is a singular noun)

5 Plural Noun Names more than one person, place, thing, or idea.
Example: I have two older sisters. (sisters is plural)

6 Forming Plurals To form the plural of most singular nouns, add –s.
Examples: painters museums shelters events attitudes students

7 Forming Plurals When a singular noun ends in s, sh, ch, x, or z, add (es). Examples: dresses brushes coaches boxes waltzes foxes

8 Forming Plurals When a singular noun ends in o, add (-s) to make it plural. Examples: concertos cameos pianos solos patios stereos

9 Forming Plurals For some nouns ending in an o preceded by a consonant add –es. Examples: heroes potatoes echoes tomatoes vetoes

10 Forming Plurals When a singular noun ends in a y preceded by a consonant, change the y to i and add (-es). Examples: story-stories activity-activities library-libraries

11 Forming Plurals When the y is preceded by a vowel (a,e,i,o,u) just add –s. Examples: alley-alleys essay-essays survey-surveys

12 Forming Plurals To form the plural of many nouns ending in f or fe, change the f to v and add (es) or (s). Examples: leaf-leaves self-selves scarf-scarves half-halves life-lives shelf-shelves loaf-loaves wife-wives thief-thieves

13 Forming Plurals For some nouns ending in f, add (s) to form the plural. Examples: Motif-motifs proof-proofs belief-beliefs

14 Forming Plurals Some nouns have the same spelling in both the singular and the plural. Examples: series species trout sheep moose

15 Forming Plurals The plurals of some nouns are formed in special ways.
Examples: child-children tooth-teeth ox-oxen woman-women mouse-mice man-men

16 Possessive Nouns A possessive noun shows who or what owns something.
The noun following a possessive noun may name a thing or a quality.

Types of Noun Rule Examples Singular noun Add an apostrophe and s. Mrs. Burwell’s daughter attends CVCA. Plural Noun ending in s. Add an apostrophe. The students’ homework is due today. Plural noun not ending in s. The men’s bathroom is closed.

18 Make the following nouns possessive
My mothers age is a secret. The football teams coach is very strict. The childrens recess is too short.
