3 How do we teach phonics? Letters & Sounds Plans based around Letters & Sounds suggested structure & activities. There are 6 phases. – Phase 1 Develops the importance of listening and attuning to sounds. Crucial before segmenting & blending. (Nursery/Reception) – Phase 2 19 phonemes- focus on verbal segmenting & blending CVC words. – VC words- up, if, am & ‘silly’ words- ip, ug, ock & 5 tricky words. (Reception) – Phase 3 Further 25 sounds. Digpraphs & Trigraphs are introduced (ch, sh, igh) Make phonetically plausible attempts at reading/ writing CVC words. – Read more tricky words & begin to spell some accurately. – ( Pupils should be secure at this phase by end of Reception)

4 How do we teach phonics? Phase 4 Reading & Spelling. CVCC, CCVC words. Words with adjacent consonants (e.g sand) and two syllable words. Build up reading, writing and spelling of tricky words. (Year 1) Phase 5 Write all common graphemes. Read & spell phonetically decodable two and three syllable words. Read automatically & spell all words in the list of 100 high frequency words.
