Molecular Polarity Molecular Polarity depends on: 1. The relative electronegativities of the atoms in the molecule(bond polarity) 2. The shape of the molecule
3
Nonpolar bond => Nonpolar molecule H 2 Two identical atoms do not have an electronegativity difference, the charge distribution is symmetrical, non polar bond. The molecule is non-polar. The electron density plot for H 2.
4
Polar bond=> Polar molecule HCl Chlorine is more electronegative than Hydrogen The electron cloud is distorted toward Chlorine The unsymmetrical cloud has a dipole moment HCl is a polar molecule. The electron density plot for HCl
5
What happens when there is more than one bond? It all depends on the arrangement of these bonds around the central element or elements!!!!!!!
6
Why is water a polar molecule? Water is a bent molecule with polar O-H bonds. The bond dipole moments add to give a resultant dipole directed toward the more electronegative oxygen. A B 2 E CH 4, methane gas is a non polar molecule because all dipoles cancel out.(symmetrical) AB 4
7
What does it mean to be polar?
